By poet and spoken word artist, Dai Woolridge.
Have I been good this Christmas?
Hands down — I’ve been properly good!
For real — I proper performed like I should
I said all the right things, I tidied my room
I listened to mother — did church on zoom
Kept my distance and wore a mask
I carried gran’s shopping bags, she didn’t have to ask!
I took out the bins, I clapped all the carers
I left a package for the binmen too in all fairness
I stayed in the house when I felt a bit off
I even did a flow test when I had a niggly cough.
I socially distanced, from every person who’d meet us
I got my measuring tape out — to check we kept 2 metres
I was reservedly pumped, filling up petrol.
I only panic bought once on quilted up toilet roll!
I sent hampers to homeless, helped out at food banks.
Got prescriptions for the shielding, without needing a thanks.
I shopped for my neighbours, recycled my waste
I left my car at home and walked every place
Have I been good this Christmas?
Hands down – I’ve been properly good!
For real — I proper performed like I should
Yet good news is good,
‘Cos it’s not based on our ‘good’
Our ‘good’ don’t cut the mustard — By itself it never could
See, it’s not about our morality
Good news came for us to be
what we never could be
Perfect love — laid down, for us sacrificially
And the burden of proof?
Good news dwelt among us full of grace and truth.
His love — we can’t earn it,
still He lovingly gives it.
Like a computer at Christmas when we should get bricks
Good news wrapped with grace — Truth is it’s a gift.
