We are loving the new series of Transformation Moments with Jonathan and Abbiih Oloyede. They share Godly wisdom, testimonies and scripture in bitesize episodes. We take a look at Abbiih’s episode on ‘expectations’ and how we can apply it to our lives. If we manage our expectations, we can manage our life. Abbiih asks us: “What do we do when our plans don’t happen? How do we pick ourselves up?”
Abbiih shares: “Expectations can be extremely high. High, medium or very low. Expectation is defined as ‘a strong belief that something will happen or be the case’. Often, what we expect from others and life has to do with what we want or believe we are due. If the expectation is not met, all hell breaks loose. If we don’t adjust our thinking, this may lead to divorce in marriage, relationship breakdowns, isolation, anger, giving up, depression and the list is endless.”
In today’s world we are contending with flawless social media presentations, which is creating an illusion of a perfect world, which isn’t so. This in itself may send us on a wild goose chase in our lives, affecting our job, career and relationships with friends.
Abbiih’s top tips for managing expectations
- Remember no one is flawless – Understanding this will help us to be more forgiving of others, less critical of ourselves and perhaps have a healthy circle of friends.
- Talk about what we anticipate – don’t assume people know what we are thinking.
- Live by Proverbs 3: 5- 6 – Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (NIV)
It is possible to have ambitions and vision for the future while keeping our feet firmly on the ground. Remembering we live in an imperfect world, where even our best laid plans can still get disrupted, is a good place to start. We can know God sees the bigger picture for our lives, jobs and relationships. If we trust God with everything, He will get us to the place we need to be. We will make mistakes, our friends and family will too. If we can forgive and keep communicating with one another, we can build healthy relationships along the way.
