Nicky Gumbel

Pioneer of the Alpha Course

Nicky Gumbel, the former vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) in London, along with his wife Pippa, spearheaded the creation of Alpha. Alpha serves as an introductory course to the Christian faith and is endorsed by numerous major Christian denominations across 169 countries.

In 1990, Gumbel assumed leadership of the Alpha Course, which had been ongoing since 1977. Under his guidance, the course underwent a transformation, shifting its focus from catering primarily to new Christians to targeting individuals outside the church who may not identify as Christians themselves.

Gumbel’s literary contributions to the Alpha Course are significant, with notable works including “Questions of Life,” which has surpassed sales of over 1 million copies. This acclaimed book, voted “Christian Book of the Year” in 1994, has been translated into 48 languages, making it accessible to a global audience. Additionally, Gumbel has authored other influential works related to the Alpha Course, such as “Why Jesus,” “Searching Issues,” “Telling Others,” “A Life Worth Living,” “Challenging Lifestyle,” “Heart of Revival,” and “30 Days.”
