Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in Lambeth Palace

Justin Welby (Archbishop of Canterbury)

Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the Church of England

The Most Revd Justin Welby’s journey to ordination began in 1992 after an 11-year career in the oil industry. His initial 15 years of service were devoted to the Coventry diocese, often in poverty stricken areas.

In 2002, he assumed the role of Canon at Coventry Cathedral, where he co-led its international reconciliation efforts. During this period, he extensively engaged in peacemaking and reconciliation work in Africa and the Middle East. Archbishop Justin’s enduring commitment to reconciliation and peace-building originated during this time.

He went on to serve as the Dean of Liverpool from 2007 to 2011 and as the Bishop of Durham from 2011 to 2012. In late 2012, he was formally announced as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury.
